Officially beginning its construction in 1863, the transcontinental railroad of the United States broke through physical, social, and political barriers in order to connect the entire nation coast-to-coast. Despite the setbacks of the Civil War, worker strikes, and financial fraud, it took less than 10 years to be completed. This line ultimately ushered the East and West of the United States into a new age of unity and reform.
